Tansania ist seit 1961 unabhängig. Das demokratische Land ist seit langem von kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen verschont geblieben. Jeweils ca. 40 Prozent der Einwohner sind Muslime oder Christen. Die Religionen leben friedlich neben- und miteinander.
Die Währung heißt Tansania-Schilling (TS). Ein- und Ausfuhr sind strengstens verboten. 1000 TS sind umgerechnet etwa 0,44 Euro.
Das Land ist arm – trotz der Bodenschätze und weltweit bekannten touristischen Anziehungspunkten wie den Kilimanjaro, der Serengeti, den Arusha- oder Tsavo-Nationalpark, den Ngorogoro-Krater (mit der größten Wildtier-Dichte weltweit) oder der Insel Sansibar.

Die 130.000-Einwohner-Stadt liegt ganz im Norden des Landes und ist als Ausgangspunkt für Kilimanjaro-Touren bekannt. Das Klima dort ist gemäßigt-tropisch. Im September betragen die Tagestemperaturen im Maximum durchschnittlich 29 Grad (Oktober 31 Grad, November 32 Grad), es scheint täglich durchschnittlich sieben Stunden lang die Sonne (Oktober und November acht Stunden). Immerhin: Nachts kühlt es auf ca. 15, 16 Grad ab.
